Roy Douglass, Col, CAP, MBM

Roy Douglass has a varied background in business, the military and as a volunteer. He spent 23 years with GTE/Verizon starting as a first-line supervisor over nine employees to managing a call center comprised of up to 500 employees at peak periods. His various position requirements ranged from field operations through training, management consulting, and human resources to field operations support. In addition to supervising and managing employees, Roy’s responsibilities included project management and implementing processes throughout GTE’s Southwest and Southeast Regions, as well as leading a “change-action” team to manage the smooth transition of network provisioning during the merger between GTE and Contel. During his career in GTE/Verizon, Roy’s significant education and training included Project Management, Career Counseling, College Recruiting and Interviewing, Management Training and Consulting, and certification as a Development Dimensions Incorporated Instructor. He retired on October 31, 2003.
Before GTE/Verizon, Roy spent more than 20 years in the US Army. In his junior year at Ball State Teachers College, he enlisted in the US Army and retired as a field grade officer at the conclusion of his military career. Roy is a graduate of Infantry Officer Candidate School, US Army Signal School, the US Army Command and General Staff College and the National Defense University’s National Security Management Course. Roy’s command experience began with 49 soldiers in his first platoon assignment and progressed to more than 700 officers and enlisted soldiers in his battalion command. His duty assignments in the Army included Platoon Leader, Staff Officer at battalion, brigade, and general staff levels, Airborne Company Commander, Infantry Advisor to the Vietnamese, Embarkation Officer on a US Navy LST, Communications-Electronics Staff Officer, and as the 1st Infantry Division (Forward) Signal Officer and Battalion Commander in Germany. His last assignment was as a Force Development Officer in US Army Forces Command, Atlanta, Georgia where he retired on 31 October 1979. His significant military awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Parachutist wings, the Pathfinder wing, the Ranger arc tab, four Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Medals, and three Army Commendation Medals, one for Heroism, the Good Conduct Medal, two Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses and the Vietnamese Wound Badge
Roy has nearly 19 years in a third “career” as a volunteer in Civil Air Patrol (CAP) where he currently commands the North Carolina Wing, CAP. As a Wing Commander, he is also a member of the CAP National Board. Roy has his Master Observer Wings, has completed the Wing Commander’s Course, The National Staff College, the Inspector General College, Region Staff College, the Inland Search and Rescue (SAR) Course, and the SAR Management Course. North Carolina Wing has more than 1400 volunteer members who train and participate in the three missions encompassed in the Federal charter of Public Law 476: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services. Roy also has more than 30 years in Boy Scouting.
While on active military duty, Roy attended college at nights and on weekends, and earned his Master of Arts Degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University, and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Florida International University.
