Services for Physicians, Other Healthcare Professionals and Students
The future of our healthcare system’s integrity and long term viability hinges on our nation’s continued ability to invest in the driving force behind that system, the healthcare professionals-- men and women who become doctors, nurses, pharmacists, veterinarians, dentists, PhD researchers, etc. As a nation, we have done a commendable job in providing excellent resources, opportunities, and venues for those trainees to develop academically. Furthermore, we continue to be proactive in narrowing the socioeconomic gaps that could preclude the trainees from reaching their career goals. Efforts that aim at increasing the number of graduates will certainly help bridge some existing shortages. However, there are still serious gaps that are not being addressed, particularly in areas of career counseling, mentoring, and objective guidance in the face of scarce grant funding, emplyment uncertainties, and the changing landscape of career demographics and market needs.
Educating the next generation of professionals must be coupled with a concerted and sustained effort of career counseling that must be in lockstep with all phases of professional academic progression to ensure a successful transition into a stable and productive future.
Our mentors are “real-life” experts in the field who will provide career insights based on the skills and experiences they have acquired throughout their careers. Our mentors sign up with the Institute because of their desire to pass knowledge and wisdom to you, the trainee. They see the value in educating the next generation of leaders and professionals on how to best position themselves for success in their career paths. Contact the IACD Today for your career mentorship needs.

Biomedical Research Graduate Students and Fellows
Doctoral training is a career stage that is heavily geared towards scientific productivity and preparation for permanent career positions in academia or industry. Although this classic career path has been tried and true by thousands of highly-educated scientists, recent economic pressures have led to many challenges that manifest at the trainees’ first attempt for career independence. Grant funding is becoming more and more difficult to obtain, and there aren’t enough coveted academic faculty positions to go around.
Many trainees find themselves lacking counsel on alternative career paths, or ways of attaining their career goals more efficiently. Others are simply not getting the sufficient career guidance in their current environment. Our career counseling service addresses this issue head on. Our mentors will interface with you and analyze your individual situation. We will help you navigate the pros and cons of every conceivable career scenario and make sure you are equipped with the right information to make the best decision for your future. |

In a recent poll conducted by the NC Institute for Emerging Issues on locally “grown” healthcare innovations, the winning topic was: Redesigning the Workforce Pipeline, a vision that includes High School Health Sciences Academy. The vision for this community partnership is to “create programs, provide guidance, and identify opportunities for interaction with the medical community for students preparing for a career in healthcare”. The IACD is proud to be taking an active role in bringing this vision to life, for the betterment of our youth and future leaders. Please contact the IACD to schedule a time with a mentor for your K 11/12 student. |
